I don’t prescribe 100% to the theory that “Jesus is the reason for the season”, but I do think we get overwhelmed with shopping and cooking and party planning during the holidays and forget there is a reason for the season and there are still people out there fighting for our freedom and sacrificing time with their families.
The Sears Heroes at Home Wish Registry is a joint effort by various organizations to provide for military personnel, veterans, and their families during the holidays. Not only is the economy struggling and families are desperate to make ends meet, many families are separated during a time of year that’s meant for togetherness. There are dozens of family stories on the Sears website, ranging from families that want a comfortable living room to spend time together to deployed soldiers with small children at home that want to take their children’s minds off their absence.
Our donations can help provide necessary items and small indulgences by making a donation to Heroes at Home. If you find a particularly touching story, one that hits close to home for you, you can fulfill specific wish list items for that family, from necessities like pots and pans and crib mattresses to holiday classics like wagons and baby dolls.
Thanks to the generosity of my parents, I just returned from five days in NYC and only spent $40. My online holiday shopping since I’ve been home is another story…
$40 vacation spending
$225 Old Navy (saved $50, got free shipping, and will return two pairs of pants since I bought multiple sizes)
$35 Deep Discount DVD (birthday present)
$52 Victoria’s Secret (saved 20% on 10 pairs of underwear)
I’m this-close to leaving my laptop at home for my Thanksgiving trip to NYC, so if you find yourself missing Daily Dollars this week, there will be a real doozie when I get back!
Happy Thanksgiving and take advantage of those Black Friday deals!
I never step foot in Kohls except to buy bras, and it was that time again. I used to think that swimsuit shopping was the most unbearable type of shopping, but bras clearly take the cake because you have to wear them every.single.day. And they must fit perfectly, otherwise you’re miserable and saggy.
This little guy is simultaneously memorizing and creepy (I think it’s the slurping noises that add the creep factor) but whatever it takes to save that extra change, right?
I was having a bad day so I replenished my book supply with some recommendations I received on my other blog and got a caramel apple cider and a breakfast sandwich from Starbucks on my way to work.
If I win Laurie’s Starbucks Giveaway, I won’t feel so bad stopping at Starbucks because I’ll have a $25 gift certificate and a Starbucks Gold Card which gets me a 10% discount!
