America Saves Week - February 18, 2010

America Saves Week 2010 is next week (February 21-28) and First National Bank of Omaha (Member FDIC) is getting the word out with a few simple steps to saving more…

  • Pay down debt by an extra $25 a month
  • Set up an Emergency Account
  • Set up a Medical Deductible Account
  • Establish a Car Deductible Account
  • Create a Vacation Account
  • Save Tax Refunds
  • Open an online savings account

FNBO also has a great Pay Yourself First calculator that asks a few simple spending questions and shows you how cutting back can add up to big savings. It’s mind boggling to think that cutting back on my daily half price Sonic Slushie habit could help me save over $16,000 over 20 years.

What are you doing to step up your savings?

This is not a sponsored post. I do not have an account with FNBO and am not endorsing their services – only their willingness to get the word out about America Saves Week.

First Time Home Buyer Tax Credit – A Sad Sad Story - February 11, 2010

By now, most everyone knows the details of the First Time Home Buyer Tax Credit – if you don’t here are the basics:

  • $8,000 tax credit for first-time home buyers or those who have not owned in the last three years.
  • Current homeowners are eligible for a $6,500 tax credit if they have lived in their current home consecutively for five of the past eight years.
  • Income limits are $125,000 for singles and $225,00 for couples.
  • Qualified homeowners need to have a written, binding contract by April 30, 2010 to be eligible.

When the tax credit was extended from November through April and my husband and I were thrilled at the possibility of taking advantage of the opportunity to buy a home in Austin, TX. Unfortunately, even though we were approved for a mortgage last summer in Chicago, qualifying factors have become more stringent and we were not approved for a mortgage when we reapplied last fall.

{insert kicking, screaming, and Nancy Kerrigan-esque “whyyyyyyy’s” here}

Even though we aren’t able to take advantage of the tax credit, an estimated 22 million did in 2009 and many more are in the process of reaping the benefits of the extention in 2010 – and we are happy for them.

Really. We are.

As we sit in our one bedroom apartment. Eating Ramen Noodles.

February 10 – Thank You ConAgra! - February 10, 2010
  • $11 Juan in a Million
  • $2 Sonic
  • $33 Costco
  • $63 Walmart

couponsToday, I was prepared.

I made a list.

I sorted my coupons.

I warned my husband to be patient and not to be intimated by anyone in line behind us that attempted to give us the “coupon stink eye.”

I bought 60 items.

Used 32 coupons.

Bringing my grocery total from $114 down to $63.

I OWNED Wal-Mart today.

Huge thanks to ConAgra, who handed out loads of great coupons to Blissdom attendees. My cabinets would be empty and my fridge would be bare without you.

January 29 thru February 19 - February 9, 2010

We’ve been trying so so hard not to spend any money. I’m still looking for a job and we have another three weeks before my husband gets a full paycheck.

  • $18 gas
  • $40 airport parking
  • $50 dog boarding
  • $11 Quiznos
  • $11 CVS
  • $8 Sonic – That’s eight days of half priced limeades! Currently our only indulgence.
  • $79 Walmart

Basically, our money situation sucks right now.
