Hidden Holiday Costs - October 23, 2010

Everyone knows the holidays are expensive. There are presents to buy, travel to book, more groceries than you’d think possible to eat, and lights to power on bushes, trees, and rooftops. If you’re prepared, you’ve budgeted for the additional expenses. You’ve put aside a little each paycheck or you have a Christmas bonus you’re banking on.

But no matter how much you budget, there’s always one expense you’re likely to overlook. For me, that expense is holiday cards. Thankfully, there are ways to keep unanticipated (or poorly planed for) costs down, like with budget friendly options for sending holiday greetings to all your friends and family from Shutterfly

Shutterfly has Christmas photo cardsfrom as low as $0.32 each in a wide variety of traditional, retro, and whimsical designs which can all be personalized with photos and text to reflect your family’s unique style. I’ve ordered holiday cards from Shutterfly last year and was impressed with the quality of their prints and their quick (and reasonably priced) shipping.

Remember to check for coupon codes to make your holiday dollars stretch even further! Right now, you can use the coupon code SHIP30 for FREE shipping on all orders over $30.

I love sending Christmas cards almost as much as I love receiving them, and with Shutterfly I can send holiday cheer to everyone and their brother while sticking to my holiday budget (even if I forget till the last minute).

This is a sponsored post. I received a coupon code for free holiday cards. Please see my site policy with any questions.

Daily Dollars – October 10 thru 17 - October 17, 2010

So, basically, all I’ve done this week is eat and blog.

Awesome.

My Neighborhood Walmart - October 14, 2010

Since moving to Texas (and becoming unemployed), I’ve become a huge fan of Walmart. Not only does their pricing allow me to buy everything I need on a limited budget, I also have two pristine Walmart stores within a five minute drive – something I didn’t have in Chicago.

I was recently asked to check out the selection of laundry detergents at my local Walmart, so I added detergent to my shopping list, and off I went. Join me on my shopping trip…

As you can see, my neighborhood Walmart really is a phenomenal place to shop. The selection of laundry detergents reflects the selection of just about any product on your list – from jams to juice, they stock all major brands plus the Great Value store brand.

Daily Dollars – October 2 thru 9 - October 9, 2010
  • $490 car payment – Prius
  • $376 car payment – Corolla
  • $190 Capital One
  • $160 Sprint
  • $16 PetSmart
  • $9 Post Office
  • $65 Target
  • $43 Chuy’s
  • $29 gas
  • $82 Jiffy Lube
  • $650 ING

margaritaThis is me enjoying a lovely margarita at Chuy’s before I went to Jiffy Lube and about fell over when I was told how much an oil change and a new air filter was going to be for the Corolla (and that was the total after using a $35 gift card I won at Blogher).

We’ll be going back to Toyota for our next oil change.

Also cause for sticker shock this week? $30 for a Kindle case. That’s 22% of the cost of the Kindle itself!

I’m also none too pleased with our cell phone bill. We added insurance and a package that lets us upgrade more frequently, which I know is worth the money, but still didn’t like seeing that new monthly total.

Little stuff like that kills me.

On a positive note, I was able to put a nice chunk of money into savings this payday, so I’m feeling a bit more secure.
