Thrifty Tip – Coupon Exchange - May 4, 2010

My good friend Cheapo McFrugalpants and I have started an informal coupon exchange and it’s pretty fun. I mean,  who doesn’t love to open their mailbox to this…

If you have friends that are couponers, keep them in mind when you’re clipping and sorting and hopefully they’ll do the same for you. Not everyone buys the same products, so you may have some high dollar coupons to give and receive!

With a coupon exchange, you and your friends can save money. Money that can be used for a girl’s night out full of (half price) margaritas!

Thrifty Tip – Printer Friendly Fonts - April 27, 2010

I already gave you a tip on how to save money by using Staples ink recycling program, but how about if I told you that you could save money by changing the font you use?

That’s right! In the AP story Here’s a legal way to print money, Dutch company Printer.com released data that found that changing to a more printer friendly font can save up to 30% in ink!

For large companies and universities, that can equate to thousands of dollars a year in savings! At home, it’ll save you a cartridge or two a year – more if you’re an aggressive coupon printer, like I am!

So what are the most printer friendly fonts? Here’s the top fonts listed in the article:

  1. Century Gothic
  2. Times New Roman
  3. Calibri
  4. Verdana
  5. Arial
  6. Sans Serif
  7. Trebuchet
  8. Tahoma
  9. Franklin Gothic Medium

Other ways to save on ink – set your printer to black only and draft mode.

Thrifty Tip – Piggy Banks - April 6, 2010

TTTuesThis week’s Thrifty Tip comes about from a purchase I made this weekend.

I know, I know. Not thrifty, but I like to think of it as an investment.

I collect Buddha statues, so when I was out shopping with my mom and sister (who were in Austin visiting from Chicago and New York) I couldn’t pass up a Buddha piggy bank from a junk store to add to my collection!

I think piggy banks are great for kids and adults. My husband and I have used a piggy bank since we got married and we cash out the change to use as our spending money on vacation every year.

I may even have two separate piggy banks; one for silver and one for pennies.

Here are my criteria for a piggy bank:

  1. Big (to hold a lot of cash)
  2. Cute (to hold my interest)
  3. Cannot be opened without smashing (to keep me honest)

Do you have a piggy bank? What are your rules for

Thrifty Tip – PaperBackSwap - March 30, 2010

I’m an avid reader but finishing 1-2 books a week got to be too pricey – until I joined PaperBackSwap.

Here’s what you do….post your old books to PaperBackSwap and mail them to other members via media mail when requested. When the book is delivered, you receive a credit, which can be used to request a book from another member!

I haven’t bought a new book is almost a year and it only costs around $2 to mail my old books and earn credits. The best part of PaperBackSwap is that it keeps a tally of the money you’ve saved by swapping books. I’m up to $292.50 saved!

Thrifty Tip – Staples Ink Recycling - March 22, 2010

Did you notice that I only spent $4 on ink cartridges at Staples last week?

That’s because I had $25 in Staples rewards for recycling ink cartridges!

Join Staples Rewards and every ink cartridge you take to your local Staples to be recycled earns you $3 in Staples Rewards. Not only that, but you also earn 10% back in rewards on all your ink and toner purchases!

Do you work in an office? Collect ink cartridges from your coworkers! Do you print coupons? I bet you go through quite a bit of ink! You can recycle up to 10 ink cartridges a month – that’s $30 in Staples Rewards!
