It’s a rare occurrence, but two nights ago, I cooked dinner for myself, my sister, and her boyfriend in an attempt to stay home and eat less meals out with a little help from a microwave bacon cooker. We’ve been wanting to make BLT’s for a long time, but hate the mess and the smell of bacon overtaking our little apartment.

I was a little scared when I unpacked the bacon cooker and saw the instructions. They might as well have been in a different language there were so many pictures, instruction numbers, and diagrams. Luckily, the bacon cooker was much easier to use than the instructions made it seem.new 004

The first thing I did was wash the cooker thoroughly to remove any manufacturing dust and odors, then I laid out all of my equipment.

new 005The cooker is the first totally enclosed bacon cooker on the market, and consists of three parts; the rack (sitting on the plate) and the container and lid (to the right). All I had to do for prep work was use a knife to place the bacon over each “wall” of the grid, twist the lid over the top of the grid, then place the entire assembly into the container and secure the locks.

I had to be careful when twisting the lid over the top of the grid, because if it isn’t in just the right spot, your bacon can come crashing down when you pick the unit up by the handle to place it inside the container.

I made an entire package of bacon, which took three cookers full of bacon at 6 minutes each. I had to do some testing with the first cooker of bacon that went in, stopping at two minute intervals to check the cooking progress. After the first trial, I was able to load the cooker and place it in the microwave for 6 minutes and forget about it.

I did notice a slight chemical smell coming from the plastic, but hopefully after a few uses and washes that will dwindle.

The cooker really eliminated a lot of grease from the bacon, but one of the problems I encountered was that the grease sitting in the bottom of the container got so hot after 6 minutes that it started to bubble and pop in the microwave and I thought that it was going to blow the lid off tnew 021he cooker. I’m going to take a guess here and say that it could be a potential fire hazard if left in the microwave too long.

I’d say that the cooker worked well but could use some improvements as far as the grease drainage and grid locking system goes, but I will be using it again to make crispy bacon and more BLT’s.
